A vintage motorcycle made by Hildebrand & Wolfmuller has sold for a whopping £86,200 at auction.

The model, circa 1894, was bought by a private German bidder to the potential dismay of other keen bike insurance policyholders whose wallets could not stretch quite as far.

Now, the model - which was the first ever vehicle to be named a motorbike - has been returned to the country in which it was made.

Wilhelm Hildebrand and Alois Wolfmuller were steam-engine engineers before they became the first motorcycle manufacturers.

The bike was sold by Bonhams at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford along with around 260 other machine, with the day's takings amounting to £1.6million for the 85 per cent of lots that sold.

Other top sellers on the day included a 1938 Brough Superior 982cc SS100 v-twin, which went to a private collector in the UK for £157,700 and a 1938 Moto Guzzi 500cc GTC/L Condor, which fetched an above-estimate £41,100.

Velocette was strongly represented at the auction, with 17 of the brand's models going under the hammer.

The top seller among the machines was the 1967 Venom Thruxton 500cc Production Racing Motorcycle, which sold for £21,850.
