Safer Scots biking

A safety conference is set to be held in Inverness, addressing the issue of the number of fatal motorcycle accidents taking place in the Highlands and Islands.

The event, which takes place at the Northern Constabulary and Highland Council's headquarters, will see presentations highlighting different aspects of motorcycling safety.

These include road safety issues, engineering, education and possible changes to the Motorcycle Test, as well as making information available to schemes already up and running - such as Bike Aid and Bike Safe.

Laura Fisher, road safety officer at the Northern Constabulary, told the BBC: "Some of the messages which will be conveyed to delegates will hopefully go some way to preventing future motorcycle tragedies on our roads."

She went on to say that the conference was aimed at promoting safe motorcycling to all clubs, riders and other associated bike users.

In 2004 there were 984 motorcyclists injured on the roads of Scotland, with 348 of these sustaining serious injuries while 41 died.

In Highland in the same year there were 32 road deaths, six of which were motorcycle riders.

Lisa MacKeillaich, a road safety officer for the Highland's Council, concluded by saying that the Motorcycle Safety Seminar would be working towards bringing these figures even further down.

Safer riding and advanced training can not only make for less accidents and fewer insurance claims but also reduce your cheap motorbike insurance premiums.
