Bike registrations up

Registrations for bikes and scooters for March 2006 have risen by 11 per cent compared to the same time last year, according to the latest statistics.

The figures, released by MCI, show that a total of 16,898 scooters and bikes were registered for use on the roads of the UK over the month.

So far this year the top selling bike has been the new Yamaha R6, which has recorded more than 630 registrations.

The 121bhp machine has been popular since its launch four years ago and the latest version made available has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

Meanwhile, the Yamaha CBR1000RR and the GSXR1000 are also doing well in the registration stakes, which has caused industry experts to make the statement that sportbikes are finally making a comeback.

Other bike sectors that have shown strong growth include Naked bikes, which have seen a 30 per cent increase in registrations.

The Suzuki GSR600 proved to be the best-seller in this range, shifting a total of 166 units.

In the cruiser class the Harley FXD custom proved to be the most popular bike, with 280 units registered in March. According to experts, this bike continues to have excellent resale values.

Finally, the 'unspecified' category of bikes, which covers a whole range of two-wheeler vehicles, saw a 140 per cent rise in registrations.
