British motorcycle brand Triumph is surpassing the big four marques to take the sales lead, it has emerged.

Overtaking Japan's top manufacturers Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki, Triumph has managed to appeal to the majority of bike insurance policyholders investing in new models.

Figures have highlighted that the firm achieved 17 per cent of the domestic motorcycle market last month, outselling the top brands in terms of bikes of 500cc and larger, the Times reports.

Chairman Lord Jones of Birmingham described Triumph as a great success story for British manufacturing.

"What Triumph is producing is a value-added product - it has to as motorbikes are a discretionary purchase. It is also bringing innovation, quality and a strong brand," he commented.

He went on to say that some of the firm's recent success has been generated by the launch of the new 1600cc cruiser the Thunderbird, which retails for £10,000.

Triumph will celebrate 20 years since its successful re-launch in 2010, marking the event with a celebration at Mallory Park, Leicestershire, on September 18th.

The day will incorporate a festival and is set to showcase models from the brand's past and present.
