The new government must address issues relating to motorcycle licensing and start to take motorcycling seriously, it has been urged.

The Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) has demanded that ministers look at problems surrounding the implementation of the new motorcycle test, which has left many bike insurance policyholders without test slots or having to travel long distances to get to their nearest exam facility.

Meanwhile, further changes to the test have been scheduled for completion in 2013, sparking concerns that further issues could arise.

"The secretary of state for transport urgently needs to get to grips with the motorcycle test and licensing issue in partnership with the motorcycle industry," commented Steve Kenward, chief executive officer of the MCI.

He added that transport policy continues to ignore motorcycling as a mainstream transport choice with a range of benefits, such as low running costs, low CO2 emissions and the ability to nip through congestion.

Mr Kenward said ministers must provide proper policy support for the industry, which is worth more than £7 billion.

Before the outcome of the general election was announced, the MCI said the government and its agencies must work in union with the industry to ensure the personal mobility and environmental benefits of two-wheel travel can be harnessed.
