Motorcyclists are being urged not to overlook their safety this bank holiday weekend.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the majority of collisions occur in dry conditions and good weather, meaning the recent sunny weather could see riders risk having to make a bike insurance claim.

The IAM also warns that most crashes take place on rural roads, which are a favourite with bikers looking to make the most of the warmer conditions and the freedom their machine gives them to enjoy the open road.

More than three-quarters of bike crashes take place in fine weather on dry roads, the organisation's findings show.

"Weekend riders should be aware that twice as many bikers die on rural roads than on urban roads," warned IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig.

He added that more serious or fatal casualties occur at weekends.

Mr Greig also warned motorists to take extra care on the roads this bank holiday weekend.

"If we all share the road safely this bank holiday, we can make sure everyone, on four wheels or two, gets the same enjoyment out of our unique countryside," he concluded.

In related news, police in Essex have said they will conduct an increased number of road safety operations this bank holiday following a number of biker casualties.
