Motorcyclists have been given some new information about helmets that could help them stay safer on the roads.

Road safety minister Mike Penning has announced new safety ratings for headgear used by bikers and also unveiled a new website to provide motorcyclists with advice on choosing the best helmet.

Department for Transport's Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (Sharp) has rated 27 new helmets and published its findings on the new website, which offers visitors a tool to search for a helmet by make, price of safety rating.

"We estimate that 50 deaths could be prevented each year if all riders wore the safest helmets available," commented Mr Penning.

He added that he hopes the safety advice and information published on the new website will help reduce rider tragedies, alongside the promotion of further training and reminding drivers to always check for bikes.

The Sharp tests discovered that the safety performance of helmets can vary by as much as 70 per cent, which might be an important point of consideration for bike insurance policyholders.

In the recent test, the safest helmets (which are awarded five stars) were shown to be the AGV T2, the Shoei X Spirit II and the Nitro Aikido full-face models.
