The number of motorcyclists killed on the roads dropped during 2009, official figures have shown.
In recent statistics, the government has revealed that rider deaths fell by four per cent last year compared with the number from 2008.
Meanwhile, the number of motorcyclists who were seriously injured also fell by four per cent.
The same figure was recorded in biker casualties, with those injured reducing to 20,703 for the year.
Meanwhile, the number of bike insurance policyholders may have risen during the year, as motorcycle traffic was up by two per cent, the figures show.
Taking into account all road users, fatalities fell by 12 per cent in 2009, according to the statistics. Pedestrian deaths dropped by 13 per cent and the number of car users losing their lives on the road fell by 16 per cent.
Calls have recently been made for the government to safeguard spending on road safety initiatives, after cuts were announced in the Budget.
Organisations including road safety charity Brake and the Institute of Advanced Motorists are lobbying ministers to protect funding for the vital measures, which since being introduced have provided an estimated £50 billion cash boost for the economy in lives saved.
