Motorcyclists looking to avoid costly bike insurance claims after buying a used model might want to protect themselves with checks prior to a purchase.

Vehicle data company HPI has revealed that one in five used machines have something to hid, whether it be outstanding finance or the fact that the model has previously been written off.

According to the firm, because bikes are smaller and more difficult to secure than cars, they are four times more likely to be stolen.

If a rider unwittingly buys a stolen model, they stand to lose the machine in addition to the money they paid for it.

Consumer services manager for HPI Nicola Johnson said used bike buyers face a number of risks but can reduce the dangers of purchasing an illegal model by carrying out checks on the machine.

"A situation where a bike is confiscated and returned to the rightful owner is a heartbreaking reality to some," she added.

According to government statistics, the rate of motorcycle theft fell from 39 per every one thousand models in 2001 to 37 in every one thousand in 2003.

However, the number of motorcycles stolen rose from 48,412 to 50,591 over the same period.
