Thousands of Britain's motorcycle insurance policyholders could be unwittingly breaking the law through their lack of awareness of road laws and licence limitations, according to research by the Post Office.

Motorcycle insurance customers who hold a provisional licence are not permitted to carry passengers, but despite this, some 40 per cent of motorists admit to having carried a passenger at some point, even though 88 per cent know it is illegal.

One in five (21 per cent) of riders using large engine motorcycles admitted that their licence permits them only to ride small bikes and mopeds, putting not only their road safety at risk but also potentially invalidating any motorcycle insurance claim they make.

Gerry Barrett of the Post Office commented that summer provides countless opportunities for riders to take to the road with their precious machines.

"However, before taking to the road we are urging bikers to check their licence and re-familiarise themselves with road laws.

"Checking they are properly insured will also help – especially in the event of any mishaps that cause damage to their bike or someone else's vehicle," he added.

Local police forces are likely to be able to offer advice about licence limitations to riders through the nationwide BikeSafe scheme.
