Motorbike insurance policyholders may be surprised to learn that police in Australia have moved to brand the Hells Angels a criminal organisation.
New South Wales police have applied to the Supreme Court in order for officers to place control orders on the motorcycle club's members.
The force's crime command Chief Dave Hudson said: "We are not saying that they are worse than other gangs; we are saying that the Hells Angels motorcycle club at this stage is the club that we have approached the Supreme Court and lodged an application to declare a criminal organisation."
He alleged that the club has links to serious criminal activity, including illicit drug trafficking, and commented that it would be "irresponsible" of the police not to use everything within their power to try and control criminal organisations within the state.
Should the court support the application, members of the Hells Angels could be banned from wearing the club's colours, prevented from associating with other members and excluded from a range of jobs and industries.
In America, the FBI closely monitors the movements of Hells Angels chapters and in 2008 an agent revealed that members of the motorcycling organisation plotted to assassinate Rolling Stones front man Sir Mick Jagger in 1969.
