Championship rider Casey Stoner is to leave Ducati to join Honda, in news which may come as a surprise to motorcycle insurance policyholders.

The 24-year-old, who rode with the Honda LCR Team in his debut MotoGP season in 2006, is to become a factory Honda rider in 2011's MotoGP World Championship.

HRC vice president Shuhei Nakamoto commented: "We are very pleased that Casey will join Honda again next year. Clearly he is one of the top riders in MotoGP and he will bring valuable speed and experience to our team."

Motorcycle insurance policyholders may have been following Casey's career progress, which has seen him cement his name in history as the second youngest rider ever to win the MotoGP Championship in 2007.

After working with Italian manufacturer Ducati for four seasons, Casey said he was grateful to the team for turning him into a world champion.

He explained that he had decided to move on and face new challenges, but said that he would not forget the "gamble" Ducati had taken to sign him at the end of 2006.

The Australian rider's last race with Ducati will be the Valencia Grand Prix on November 7th 2010.
