The government should improve road conditions to reduce the risk of motorcyclists having accidents that require them to make a claim on their motorcycle insurance, research by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) has revealed.
A survey from the organisation commissioned for Ride to Work Day on July 21st found that two-fifths (43 per cent) of motorcyclists believe the government's priority is to improve the condition of British roads, while 36 per cent said improving car drivers' awareness of motorcyclists is most important.
Repairing and renewing road surfaces could reduce the number of motorcycle insurance claims, as could developing crash barriers and signage. Over half (58 per cent) of respondents believed this could encourage more drivers to take up motorbike or scooter riding.
MCI chief executive Steve Kenward commented: "As bikes can help to reduce congestion, reduce pollution and reduce journey times for all road users, improving road conditions can only be a positive step.
"It would also demonstrate a commitment to fully integrating powered two-wheelers into transport policy and planning," he noted.
The survey also found that a quarter (24 per cent) of riders use their motorcycle to commute every day, while another 22 per cent ride their bikes a few times a week.
A report by the Road Safety Foundation recently revealed how low-cost improvements such as resurfacing, coating roads with high-friction anti-skid treatments and simplifying junction layout and signing can reduce the number of fatal and serious accidents.
