Motorcycle insurance policyholders interested in eco driving may have heard that American manufacturer Brammo has announced a trio of electric motorbikes available for purchase soon.

The Empulse electric sportbike, of which there are three production models, will be capable of speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour (mph) for varying average distance ranges.

The Empulse Sixty will have a 60-mile average range at top speed, while the Empulse Eighty will be capable of an 80-mile average range without recharging. The Empulse One Hundred can travel 100 miles on a single charge, but all three models can have their range extended by driving at lower speeds.

Brammo chief executive Craig Bramscher noted that motorcycle insurance policyholders want electric bikes that offer increased speed and range, and described Brammo's new models as "game-changing".

"Our customers expect Brammo to design and produce the world's most exciting (and affordable) electric motorcycles and that's exactly what we have done," he commented, adding: "today's announcement promises no more range anxiety for Brammo customers".

The models will contain Brammo's electric powertrain system, featuring the brand's Power battery pack and Power vehicle management system.

The Empulse will be the first production electric motorcycle in the world to have a water-cooled motor.

Prices in the US start at $9,995 (£6,500) and deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2011.
