Riding technique can contribute to tyre 'square-off'

Motorcyclists are being warned of the dangers associated with continuous upright riding on fast, straight routes, which could result in having to make a claim on their motorcycle insurance.
Road safety campaign group TyreSafe is advising riders that long journeys at high speeds, particularly on motorways, can result in the meeting of the tyre's sidewall and tread to 'square-off', leaving a loss of grip on winding roads.
TyreSafe motorcycle tyre technical specialist Gary Hartshorne commented that this will always affect motorcycle tyres because of the way they are designed, but driving on winding roads can prolong the life of the tyre as squaring-off takes longer to appear.
He added that the materials used, the compound of the tyre and the original profile of the tyre can also impact on squaring-off.
Some tyres have a flatter profile to start with while others can be very pointy. The more 'pointy' they start out as, the more the squaring-off will become apparent as the tyre gets older," Mr Hartshorne pointed out.
The only way to address this problem is to adjust riding technique and check for under- and over-inflation of tyres, as this can exacerbate the issue.
TyreSafe works across the country to raise awareness of the associated dangers of travelling with worn or defective tyres.
