Campaigners fighting to reinstate free roadside parking for motorcycle insurance policyholders have lost after the High Court ruled against them.

Lord Justice Pitchford rejected claims that Westminster Council's parking charge of £1 a day was introduced without a full consultation and with the view to raise revenue.

He ruled that the council's objectives, which included "the termination of discriminatory treatment between motorcycles and cars", were "perfectly legitimate", Motorcycle News reported.

The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), which represents motorcycle insurance policyholders across the UK, commented that the ruling "signals the end of free motorcycle parking" because other local authorities are likely to implement the same stance in their districts.

Chris Hodder of the BMF said the organisation is disappointed with the result.

"Protesters have vowed to fight on until Westminster is forced to back down by public demand," he noted.

Activist group No To Bike Parking Tax, which brought the legal action, had claimed that the council had not carried out a full consultation before implementing the scheme.

However, councillor Lee Rowley, Westminster's Cabinet member for parking and transportation, said that the decision to charge motorcyclists £1 a day to park was "rigorously scrutinised, open to widespread public debate and has now been tested in the High Court".
