Motorbike enthusiasts have managed to ride a BMW S1000RR to just under 200 miles per hour (mph) by using a £22 gadget and gaffer tape.

The experiment, carried out by motorcycle insurance customer magazine Performance Bikes, saw the standard bike given a new rear sprocket to increase its top speed.

Publication editor Matt Wildee told Motorcycle News: "To increase the potential top speed, the rear sprocket was swapped for one with two fewer teeth. This yielded 191mph - 2mph more than the bike achieved with the standard sprocket."

The mirrors were removed and gaffer tape was then used to cover the screen slots and gaps around the headlights, which resulted in the bike getting up to 195mph.

Finally, the test rider realised that when he sat further back over the tail of the motorcycle, the bike would go faster.

The top speed achieved by the team was 197.289mph, but the vehicle was given modifications that would render it not roadworthy, so motorcycle insurance policyholders should not try out the experiment on their own vehicles.

BMW is currently running a promotion in the US for any active military personnel who purchase an S1000RR, in which they will receive free race ABS and dynamic traction control upgrades for free if they buy their bike before December 31st 2010.
