Mini motorbike deaths raise safety questions

Two separate fatal incidents this weekend have raised questions over the safety of miniature motorbikes, as well as raising concerns over the affordability of the vehicles and the cheap motor bike insurance which comes with it.

Crashes in Humberside and West Yorkshire saw three young men die this weekend, with a teenager being held for questioning by Humberside Police.

Road safety experts are worried that the availability of such vehicles on credit - as well as relatively low levels of bike insurance compared to full-sized motorbikes - has caused a boom in their sale and the number of associated accidents.

Bill Lloyd, the uncle of Gavin Spruce who died in the Yorkshire crash, has said he hopes the fatalities at least cause others to be more careful and take better safety precautions.

In an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Mr Lloyd said of his nephew: "He was a real daredevil. Like a lot of lads his age, you could tell him all about the dangers of bikes but he just wouldn't listen."

"I just hope people read about Gavin and start paying attention to the dangers."

With some miniature motorbikes being available for less than £100, campaigners are concerned that the number of accidents - particularly as many are believed to be ridden without a licence and proper bike insurance - may continue to rise.
