Motorcycle insurance policyholders considering a trip around the UK should stop to see the sights of Durham, the city's tourism board has stated.
Craig Wilson, destination development and marketing manager for Visit County Durham, commented that attractions such as Beamish: The Living Museum of the North and Durham cathedral and castle are pulling in the crowds.
"Its picturesque river setting, lush green environs, cobbled streets and independent shops and boutiques make it a relaxing and stimulating short break destination," he pointed out, adding that more motorcycle insurance customers and other visitors are choosing "short city breaks, country cottage retreats in the Durham Dales or a luxury stay ... on the Durham Heritage Coast".
Motorcycle insurance policyholders who are fans of culture might enjoy the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, which features a collection of European art, while Beamish Museum offers visitors a look back in time at the lives of people living in the north-east in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Mr Wilson's comments follow figures released by One North East showing that Durham has experienced the highest growth of tourism in the region, boosting the local economy by £25 million.
The number of visitors staying overnight in the city has also risen, up 16 per cent since 2003.
