Police target underage bikers
Police in Bolton are launching an initiative to clamp down on youngsters causing a great deal of nuisance to local residents by illegally riding motorbikes.
Officers say that anybody who rides around without bike insurance, MOT or tax can only do so if it is on private land with the permission of the landowner; otherwise, they are liable to prosecution.
In an effort to deal with the problems caused by underage off-road bikers, police are now instructing petrol stations not to serve anyone aged under-16, while off-road and minibike sellers are also being told not to make any sales to underage bikers.

Inspector Tony Kenyon told Bolton Evening News: "Not only does off-road biking cause a nuisance for residents but it poses a danger to the public and the riders."
He added: "I don't think many parents, are aware of the potential cost to them when they buy one of these bikes for their child. In the vast majority of cases they may as well have put the couple of hundred pounds they spent straight in the bin, because the rider is breaking the law every time they leave their home."
Police launched the initiative in conjunction with Bolton Council and other local services after residents complained these illegal bikers were causing them a great deal of nuisance, amid reports youngsters were also obtaining petrol by filling soft drinks bottles with fuel at petrol stations.
This summer, anyone caught riding a motorcycle illegally will have it seized and will have to pay a £105 charge plus storage costs within 21 days, or else it will be destroyed.
