Special bikes help deal with accidents
Traffic patrols in the Midlands have been equipped with a specialist motorcycle designed to help clear up in the aftermath of road accidents.
The Highways Agency will be using the BMW 1200 GS motorbike, which has been customised with strobe lights, mobile phone, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and variable message signs, on strategic roads in Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire.
Deployed to the agency's special Incident Support Units (ISUs), the bike will be utilised in enabling officers to cone off incident areas and redirect any traffic in the interim, allowing for roads to be restored to full operation in as little time as possible.

Agency area manager Iftikar Mir explained: "The Highways Agency is continually looking for ways to improve safety and reduce disruption for drivers.
"The use of bike and rider to address incidents as part of the managing agent's toolkit is an invaluable resource for our network. We shall be monitoring its effectiveness in helping us to deal with incidents more quickly, safely and efficiently; and in our aim to keep inconvenience to other drivers to a minimum."
It is felt that the bike will be particular use to ISUs in that it is able to get the rider to incidents more quickly and easily than other vehicles, enabling them to assess early on exactly what help is needed.
