BMF hits out at proposed EU biking regulations
The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) has dismissed many of the proposals made in a new EU paper for failing to understand or recognise the potential motorbikes offer.
The BMF criticised the Reduction of Energy Use in Transport report as being biased against motorcycles and rubbished many of its suggestions, such as calling for a 650cc limit on bikes when the BMF says that many 1000cc-1200cc models offer better fuel consumption.
It also hit out at calls to make four-stroke engines the standard when there are relatively few two-stroke engine bikes left on the road and the majority of these do not consume much fuel and have effective controls on their emissions.

BMF senior government relations executive Trevor Magner explained: "There is a case for improving motorcycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and we support putting pressure on motorcycle manufacturers to do this, but this paper misses the point.
"Motorcycles in the EU have been subject to type-approval and thus emissions regulations since July 1999. Tinkering with the technicalities will have far less effect on the environment than treating the motorcycle as a viable alternative to the car."
Equally subject to BMF criticism was the paper's advocacy of the implementation of new CO2 limits on motorcycles, which the federation claimed were based on classifications that are completely divergent from existing licensing and national taxation categories.
It also censured the report for failing to acknowledge that most motorcycles currently have fuel injection and that this also makes redundant the paper's call for single cylinder engines to balance the air fuel ratio, as fuel injection enables a good balance to be maintained in all engines.
