Bikers threatened by oil spills

Backed by the British Motorcycle Federation (BMF), a group of MPs have called on the government to increase awareness of the threat posed by oil spills to motorcyclists.

Conservative Bill Wiggin, the chair of the All Party Motorcycle Group and several other MPs have signed a motion in favour of the BMF's KillSpills campaign, which wants to make motorists and oil companies more aware of how dangerous spillages can be for bikes and scooters.

The BMF's government relations executive Richard Olliffe welcomed the motion, saying that it was indicative of the support for the KillSpills campaign and calling on bikers to lobby their Mps to sign it as well.

Mr Wiggin, himself a keen motorcyclist, commented: "Diesel spillage is a real danger to all two wheeled vehicle users and it just shouldn't be happening.

"We have an obligation to make the roads as safe as possible for all road users that's why I and my fellow signatories were more than happy to table this motion."

The KillSpills initiative has set out several points as to how to limit the number of dangerous spills on the road, including publicising the threat through warning signs at petrol stations, the Highway Code and the THINK! Campaign.

It also calls on the government to take the lead in limiting spillage, asking departments and local authorities to warn their drivers of the dangers of not taking care when refuelling their vehicles.
