Harley-Davidsons selling strongly in Europe
Motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson says that it is enjoying an upsurge in its European sales, thanks to a continuing enthusiasm for biking across the continent.
Having enjoyed a good 2005 in Europe, with a 20.6 per cent increase in sales on the year before, Harley-Davidson has began 2006 equally soundly with a 7.1 per cent rise in the first quarter alone.
Its Sportster model did particularly well in 2005, with a 21.6 per cent climb in sales year-on-year and the company has accredited the success of this and other custom motorcycles, like the Dyna Street Bob, on its understanding of the needs of European bikers.

John Russell, Harley-Davidson's managing director for Europe, commented: "Our heavyweight touring and cruising motorcycles command incredible loyalty and many European enthusiasts make these motorcycles a part of their way of life.
"However, most Sportster sales are to people new to the Harley-Davidson experience. We have worked hard to underline the affordability of these motorcycles and, encouragingly, a great many Sportster owners go on to explore the rest of our product range."
Mr Russell added that Harley-Davidson Europe continued to work in complete tandem with the company's product team over in Milwaukee and that more models could be designed specifically for the European market.
He said that his firm would not be disclosing details of any future products until later on in the summer, but that he and his colleagues were "excited by the progress that has been made" and he advised European bikers to "watch this space".
