Fogarty could be headed for MotoGP

Former Superbike racer and now team boss Carl Fogarty could be set for a switch of disciplines to MotoGP after talks with several leading bike manufacturers.

Fogarty, who retired in 2000, has endured a miserable season as head of the Foggy Petronas team in the World Superbikes (WSB) championship, with star racers Craig Jones and Steve Martin at only 12th and 30th in the current overall standings respectively.

The 40-year-old team owner was at the British GP at Donington to talk with the heads of bike manufacturers Yamaha, Ducati and Honda there about the possibility of him working with one of them, as well as with Carmelo Ezpeleta, who runs MotoGP.

He told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: "They want me in the MotoGP paddock, but so do the World Superbike organisers, and the same goes with the British Superbike Championship promoters who would like to see me racing in this country.

"I'm such a big name in the sport, thanks to the WSB, but I don't know what the MotoGP people think of me."

Having been a four-time WSB winner as a racer, Fogarty remains ambitious as a team manager and says that he will only move to MotoGP if he feels that his team has a real chance of winning it.

The possibility rests largely on if he can get the backing from the right calibre of both manufacturer and sponsors, though he is unlikely to get a concrete deal with one without attaining support from the other.
