Police call for better biker safety

Officers have pleaded for motorcyclists to take greater care on the road this summer, after five were killed in the space of a fortnight.

The call comes from Staffordshire Police after the spate of fatalities that took place over July, beginning on the 12th when a biker crashed into a van and continuing the following day when another lost control and hurtled into signs at a roundabout.

Three more motorcyclists were killed in collisions with cars by the end of the month and in response the force's road safety chief superintendent Janet Stubbs has urged bikers to stay aware on the roads, or else risk losing their lives as well.

She explained: "Behind each death there are families who have unexpectedly lost loved ones in traumatic circumstances.

"The current good weather can fool people into driving with more abandon and lead to more motorcyclists on the roads. By taking simple road safety steps, bikers and motorists can dramatically reduce the risk of these tragedies."

Superintendent Stubbs added that motorcyclists can stay safe simply by riding cautiously and alertly, while drivers can also do their bit by themselves staying alert to the presence of motorbikes on the roads.

Although only one per cent of road users in Staffordshire are bikers, one in four of all road deaths in the region between April 2005 and March 2006 involved motorcyclists.
