MCI backs government action on mini motos
The Motorcycle Industry (MCI) has lauded the government for its new tough stance on illegal mini moto riding, but has called on it to take positive action as well.
Under the Home Office's £200,000 RESPECT initiative, young riders who use these mini-bikes illegally will have points put against their license and repeat offenders will have their vehicles taken away and destroyed.
However, while the MCI is supportive of the government's hard-line approach, it believes that it is only one half of the solution and that mini-bikers need to be provided with more tracks and sites where they can ride their bikes legally.

MCI director of public affairs Craig Carey-Clinch explained: "We know that the illegal use of mini motos is causing significant nuisance for individuals and communities across the UK.
"However, the MCI also believes that legitimate use of mini-bikes can be a positive, worthwhile and highly beneficial activity if properly provided for."
Mr Carey-Clinch called on local authorities across the country to work to establish off-road riding areas where the majority of mini-bikers can ride, meaning that those who would continue to flout the law and ride illegally could therefore have no excuses.
He added that parents also have a responsibility to ensure that if their child has an unregistered and unlicensed bike then they only ride it in their garden or on private land where they have obtained permission to.
