Britain gets first car park motorcycle lockers

Lockers designed to safely store motorbikes have been set up in a car park in Sheffield -the first time that such installations have been set up in any car park in the UK.

Although 1,300 of Motosafe's lock-up shelters are already in use across Britain, the three that have been fitted in the Fitzwilliam Street car park provide a notable first and are hoped to mark a new advance in the battle against motorbike theft in the city.

Costing just 60 pence to use for an hour and available for usage at all times, the lockers provide storage space not just for the bike itself but also for the rider's helmet, leathers and other gear.

Sheffield City Council's cabinet member for transport Terry Fox commented: "This is a really positive way of encouraging people into the city using an environmentally-friendly method of transport as well as helping to reduce crime in the city centre.

"We will be monitoring their usage to see whether the scheme could be extended to other car parks in the future."

It is hoped that the installation of these new lockers will encourage riders to keep their bike safely locked up rather than exposed to the elements and also potential thieves.

Three more of the lockers are to be set up in Sheffield's Rockingham Street car park and Motosafe managing director David Boath expects them to be a roaring success, anticipating that they will become far more widespread in their use before long.
