Irish racer killed

Popular racer Darran Lindsay was killed last week in a crash while preparing for the Killalane road races near Dublin.

Lindsay, who hailed from Dundrod in Northern Ireland, is said to have had no time to react when the rider in front of him began to slow down and he was thrown off his bike in the collision, before being pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

It was a tragic end to a successful road racing career that began in 1990 and brought him four Irish championships and five wins in the Ulster Grand Prix, as well as wins in the North West 200 and the Manx Grand Prix.

Mervyn Whyte, clerk at the North West 200 course, described Lindsay as "a brilliant road racer, a modest, cheerful character who will be sadly missed".

He told BBC News: "Off the track, he was friendly, modest, cheerful and laid-back and always had a wee smile on his face, always fond of a bit of banter."

Fellow rider Adrian Archibald was similarly quick to praise Lindsay, describing him as "a great racer and a pleasant person" and claiming the 34-year-old had been in some of the best form of his life this season.

The 34-year-old's death throws further doubt over the future of road racing in Northern Ireland, following on from the deaths of several high-profile practitioners of the sport in recent years, including the legendary Joey Dunlop back in 2000.
