Police issue illegal moped warning
Many of the mopeds ridden in the south Gloucestershire and south Bristol areas are not roadworthy in some way, a recent police operation has revealed.
Of the 38 mopeds randomly stopped and examined by officers in these two districts, all were found to be defective in some way that made them a danger on the road, while three quarters of them were also uninsured.
Carried out earlier this month as part of Avon and Somerset Constabulary's operation Torque, these searches led to 13 mopeds being confiscated in the Staple Hill area and another eight in the Broadbury area.

Sergeant Andy Workman commented: "Beat managers worked with the community to identify hotspot areas where nuisance bikers had been sighted. They stopped the riders in their tracks and took them and their bikes to be tested.
"Taking this number of vehicles off the road will be welcomed by communities in numerous areas of South Gloucestershire, which have had the quality of their lives severely disrupted by illegal motorbikes."
In total, 49 vehicles were stopped and examined, with 48 of the owners handed prohibition notices, ten given fixed penalty notices and three of them arrested.
Successful operations such as this have already been carried out in Bath and Taunton and police warn that they will not hesitate to implement crackdowns elsewhere in the region.
