Let riders use bus lanes, says MCI
Biker safety in London has improved due to the congestion charge, but according to the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) it could be enhanced still by allowing riders to use bus lanes.
New figures show that the number of rider casualties within the congestion charge zone has fallen by 13 per cent and the MCI believes this is because the decrease in cars in the area means that bikes are now more visible there.
However, the association feels that accidents could be reduced further if bikers were allowed to ride in bus lanes and expects that an ongoing official investigation into this possibility will prove its promising potential.

Director of public affairs Craig Carey-Clinch explained: "If there is no evidence that bikes in bus lanes put riders and other road users at risk then we can see no reason why Londoners will not be able to enjoy the same benefits in other areas that have progressive transport policies that are integrating bikes into mainstream planning."
He accused some planners of being loath to give preferential treatment to bikers even when it could reduce casualties and called on them to embrace the pollution and congestion-reducing capabilities of two-wheeled transport.
It is not the first time that officials have come in for criticism for penalising rather than defending riders, with the British Motorcyclists Federation recently accusing the Driving Standards Authority of making it overly difficult to take up motorcycling.
