Rossi knuckles down for Monetgi race

Valentino Rossi admits that he is not a big fan of the Montegi circuit in Japan, but he is nonetheless determined to get a win there this weekend as he seeks to retain his MotoGP title.

Currently second in the table and quickly running out of races, Rossi needs a good result in the Japanese GP but his record in it has occasionally been patchy and he failed to complete last year's edition after colliding with Marco Melandri.

As he chases down championship leader Nicky Hayden, the Italian says that he knows making the most of the practice time available is the key to winning this weekend, but that even so, it will be far from easy.

He explained: "Motegi is going to be a very important race for us, firstly because we know it's going to be difficult and secondly because we have to try to get more points from Hayden in order to stay in the fight.

"My M1 has been pretty good recently and I think we're going there in good shape, so hopefully we can make the most of the weekend and go back to Europe with an even better shot at the title."

The achievement of a third consecutive podium finish in last weekend's Australian GP was somewhat diminished for Rossi by the fact that Hayden was only two places behind him.

Therefore, while he succeeded in further reducing the American's lead, the Yamaha rider will still need to score 21 points more than his rival over the next three races if he is not to surrender his title for the first time in six years.
