Rossi turning up heat on Hayden

Valentino Rossi has added some spice to his MotoGP title race with Nicky Hayden by claiming that the American is simply not in the same class as him.

Rossi has eroded the Honda rider's margin at the top of the table to just 12 points thanks to a run of podium finishes, culminating in second place in last weekend's Japanese GP - a race in which Hayden could only manage fifth.

Now, with just two races to go, Rossi has questioned his rival's title credentials, claiming that in terms of talent, he and compatriots Loris Capirossi and Marco Melandri "are from another planet" to Hayden, although he admits that the run-in will still be tough.

He explained: "12 points are not much but they're still 12 points and I have to make them up on a couple of difficult tracks.

"It's not going to be easy for us but it's not going to be easy for Hayden and Honda either. If I can ride the way I want to, my team and I are potentially superior."

The Italian confessed that he has actually enjoyed the role of underdog up till now, but warned that in the next two races "every minute and every metre" would count and that he will be focused only on winning them both.

This year's championship race has become a tad testy in recent weeks, with Hayden allegedly left furious when Rossi illegally overtook Casey Stoner during the Australian GP without being punished, although the American has since played down the incident.
