Riders told to keep bikes locked up

Police in the east Bristol area are providing motorcyclists with equipment to help them ensure that their bikes are safe from would-be thieves.

Officers from Avon and Somerset Constabulary are offering riders a free metal ground anchor, which can be fitted to either walls or floors and that bikes can be securely chained up to with a British Security standard lock, which is also provided.

This initiative comes as part of the wider Relentless on Car Crime operation and it is hoped it will be of aid in particular to riders of small motorbikes and mopeds, which are believed to be especially vulnerable.

Inspector Polly Johnson explained: "Nearly 75 per cent of the bikes stolen in Bristol had a cylinder capacity of 125cc or less.

"These smaller machines are lighter and easier for the offender to simply carry away if they are unable to start them right away due to a steering lock or a chain through the wheel which is secured to a solid object, like a post, railing or ground anchor."

She added that these bikes are even more at risk as their owners are often younger, inexperienced riders who do not understand the need for maximum vehicle security or who simply cannot afford to buy the necessary equipment.

The force recently alerted motorcyclists in nearby Bath to the threat of bike theft after security was found to be extremely poor, writing to 70 riders reminding them to always park in a safe area and to install adequate security measures on their bike.
