MAG says no need for daytime lighting
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has criticised the idea that vehicles should have their lights on at all times, warning that this distracts from the real issues surrounding biker safety.
Following a recent consultation, the EU has proposed the universal implementation of daytime running lights (DRL), which the MAG has decried as "desperate gimmickry", claiming that there is no evidence that this system will have any impact on road safety.
It has accused the EU of sidestepping the real issue of actually protecting vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists and instead pursuing the more politically expedient goal of merely trying to look like it is doing something about reducing casualties.

MAG president Ian Mutch stated: "This is EU lunacy at its cynical worst.
"A serious issue is being trivialised by politicians posturing for credibility against a background of cosy commercial concessions through grasping the simple baton of a sad gimmick."
Mr Mutch drew attention to the environmental downside of DRL, which lies in the greater level of carbon dioxide emissions that result from vehicles having their lights switched on at all times.
Moreover, the MAG is suspicious that this proposal has been formulated so as to rescind the pressure on carmakers to observe potentially costly measures they have previously been asked to implement in order to protect others on the road.
