Hayden "prepared" for Portugal test

MotoGP frontrunner Nicky Hayden has warned that he is ready for this weekend's Portuguese GP, despite his relative lack of experience in this particular race.

The American has had a fortnight to recuperate from what turned out to be a ruinous trio of races from his point of view, failing to make the podium in any of them while Valentino Rossi reduced his lead to just 12 points.

Yet despite this dry spell, Hayden is retaining his optimism and promises that, having put in some extra practice time following his fifth-placed finish in the Japanese GP, he is now ready and waiting for this crucial race.

"I'm quite excited about the whole weekend in Portugal," he avowed.

"It's a huge race for me - I know that and I'm prepared for it. The team had a couple of days testing after the last race in Japan and we made some progress there, so I'm definitely looking forward to this one."

The Honda rider nonetheless admitted to his lack of familiarity with Portugal's Estoril track, where he has never practiced before and also missed a previous race through injury.

Despite this, it is conceivable that a podium place this time around could be enough for Hayden to clinch this year's championship, while should he win this weekend, then Rossi would have to finish in the top four to keep the title race alive.
