Police try to teach scooter safety
Officers in Hertfordshire are putting on an event with the aim of teaching the county's young scooter riders how to be as safe as possible on the road.
Next week's Safety on Scooters (SOS) day will be held at the police station in Harpenden, near Hemel Hempstead, with the aim of attracting conscientious 16 to 17-year-old scooter and moped owners.
Those present will be given the opportunity to pick up safety tips from Hertfordshire County Council's road safety unit and to have their bike checked over by qualified mechanics, who will also carry out any necessary minor repairs for free.

SOS organiser sergeant Lewis Ducket commented: "A high proportion of young people ride these machines to enable them to get around; however, locally we have seen an element of inappropriate and dangerous use of them, with riders wearing very little protective clothing.
"The police moped has been on the streets tackling this and this event shows our determination to combat these issues."
He explained that scooter and motorbike riders are more vulnerable than other road users and any mistakes, no matter how small, could lead to an accident that could very well cost them their lives.
Teenage riders who attend the SOS event will also get a chance to look at some of the motorcycles used by Hertfordshire Constabulary, as well as to win some free accessories for their own bikes.
