Safe riding scheme shows young bikers the way

A new scheme in Leeds teaching antisocial riders how to lawfully use their motorcycles has proved extremely successful, police have said.

Officers from the city's north-west sector have been cooperating with Leeds City Council's Neighbourhood and Housing Department on the Off the Streets project, working with previously misbehaving bikers who have now seen the error of their ways.

Whereas these youths were once on a slippery slope to more serious criminal activities, they now get the chance to practice their motorcycling skills in the more suitable surroundings of the BUMPY local motorbike centre.

Councillor Les Carter commented: "I am delighted to see a project that shows young people some leadership.

"This encourages them to take responsibility for their actions in a positive way; a lot of schemes don't do this, but it's good to see the council and police working with youngsters rather than against them."

Off the Streets has already had a huge positive impact, with the number of reported incidents of illegal motorcycle use down 75 per cent for September and October on last year's figure.

It has now caught the attention of Yamaha, which has supplied four of its motorbikes at a reduced price in order to augment the good work already being done by the scheme's organisers.
