FEMA opposes compulsory daytime lighting
Plans to make it mandatory for all vehicles to use lighting in daytime will badly endanger bikers, according to the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA).
Representatives from FEMA expressed this opinion at a recent seminar, claiming that the EU drive to make daytime running lights (DRL) compulsory across the continent is being propelled by the interests of carmakers and lighting manufacturers.
The federation feels that the Europe-wide implementation of this policy would make bikers harder to see on the roads and that the scheme's promoters are effectively saying that it is acceptable to endanger their riders' lives if it improves the safety of car users.

General secretary Aline Delhaye explained: "We all agree on the overall objective of improving road safety; however, FEMA cannot accept the current safety-based tactics launched by the pro-DRL lobbies taking advantage of the 2010 casualty reduction objective.
"Every life - whether a car driver, a motorcyclist, a cyclist or a pedestrian - is worth the same. Raising the risk of one category of road users at the cost of saving another is simply ethically unacceptable."
FEMA was heartened by the news that the British government for one is sceptical about the idea of DRL becoming EU law, with Ian Yarnold from the Department for Transport claiming that its evaluation of the policy leans heavily toward the debit side.
The head of the European Commission's road safety unit has also urged caution over DRL in light of the issues being raised by motorcyclists and has promised that it will not be put into place without the assent of all the relevant groups.
