Hayden on road to recovery
MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden should be back to defend his title next season after surgery on his injured shoulder was performed successfully.
Hayden sustained an undisplaced fracture after colliding with Dani Pedrosa during the Portuguese GP â€" a fact that he did not divulge at the time for fear of handing a psychological advantage to Valentino Rossi, who was then leading the table.
Having secured the championship when Rossi crashed on the final day, Hayden has now had an operation to help his injured shoulder heal, as well as to replace a metal plate inserted after a previous accident and he is now looking forward to racing in 2007.

He said afterwards: "I actually feel pretty good already.
"I'll be off bikes for a while but Aldon Baker, my trainer, is going to get me back doing some cardio work next week and I'm definitely looking forward to that. It's obviously been a great year all round and I'm glad I've had the shoulder fixed because it means I can now begin to prepare for the defence of this title."
The Honda rider also extended his thanks to Dr Art Ting, the surgeon who performed the operation, as well as to all his staff at the Freemont Clinic in California.
The American will need to be at his sharpest to retain his crown, with Rossi and Pedrosa both posting good results during recent testing in Spain and many commentators anticipate that next year will see one of the finest seasons in competition history.
