Road traffic officers from Buckinghamshire County Council have received recognition from Prince Michael of Kent for a successful drive to reduce motorcycling fatalities.

They met His Royal Highness at the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards, where they were commended for improving safety on a particular bend of road in the region where three bikers were killed and several others injured over a five-year period.

It was assessed that riders were focusing on off-road objects as they rounded this curve, so in 2002 traffic officers inserted hazard marker posts around the outside of the bend so as to keep bikers' eyes on the road and since then there have been no more crashes there.

This success has been the platform for the council's 'Where You Look, is Where You Go' concept for motorcyclist safety, which it has passed on to other local authorities and which it also followed with the launch of its Be a Better Biker campaign.

Buckinghamshire's cabinet member for transportation Val Letheren said before the ceremony: "I'm delighted to be accepting this award. Our Road Safety Team work tremendously hard to promote safety on our county's roads.

"Over 150 bikers have attended our Be a Better Biker assessment days in order to improve their skills and we believe this, along with many other road safety projects, is having a significant impact on the numbers of people injured or killed on the county's roads."
