Mini-motos not a great idea for Christmas?

Parents have been urged not to go to the expense of buying their children a miniature bike this Christmas, unless they know of somewhere that they can ride it legally.

Police in the West Midlands are reminding parents that, for any bike to be ridden in a public space, the rider is required to have a license and insurance policy for it, while the vehicle must also be taxed and registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

The force have already had to confiscate 150 mini-motos this month and officers are worried that while many mums and dads will be shelling out for these vehicles, comparatively few know about the laws governing their usage.

PC Steve Rogers explained: "The police are not out to spoil your Christmas but, unless you abide by the road traffic laws and ride your mini-moto on private land with the landowner's permission, there is a strong possibility it will be seized and crushed.

"Parents who allow their children to break the law are also potentially liable to face prosecution."

Earlier this year, the Home Office granted police powers to destroy the vehicles of repeat lawbreakers, as well as to dock points off their licenses even if they are not yet old enough to hold one.

West Midlands Police's warning echoes that of the Motor Cycle Industry, which last month also urged parents not to buy these mini-bikes as Christmas presents without due consideration of where they can be ridden afterwards.
