MAG backs criticisms of "pointless" legislation

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has backed politician Philip Bradbourn's recent claim that proposed new EU rider licensing legislation is unnecessary.

A member of the European Parliament, Mr Bradbourn has called the third European license directive "pointless and over-prescriptive" in the law changes that it will entail for bikers and claimed that the UK's existing legislation is more than adequate.

His criticisms have been upheld by MAG director of public affairs Trevor Baird, who also denounced the directive's architects for believing that through increasing the level of regulation involved in motorcycling they can thereby make it safer.

He explained: "This draconian legislation which has been foisted on motorcycling by European transport ministers and the European Commission is a litany of compromises and confusion, with the principle of harmonisation that one size fits all and does nothing to address the real issues of motorcycling safety."

Should the legislation be implemented, it will mean riders will be able to progress onto more powerful bikes according to their age, rather than on the basis of experience as is currently the case in Britain.

Mr Baird argued that what young riders need is a system of motorcycle training that is well-organised, worth their money and above all capable of furnishing them with all the skills they require - not "a philosophical approach that has no place in the real world".
