MCI safety drive rewarded
Pioneering efforts by the Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) to improve rider safety in the UK have been recognised with a Prince Michael Road Safety Award.
The MCI was rewarded for its dedication to reducing motorcycling casualties over the past three years, following the release of its 19-point safety strategy advising both government and manufacturers on what courses of action to take.
In this time the organisation has endeavoured gainfully to achieve a number of objectives, such as publicising the importance of responsible riding and the creation of a Motorcycle Safety Committee to prioritise the issue of biker safety.

Head of motorcycle safety Karen Cooke commented: "The MCI team has worked tremendously hard to achieve this and will continue to strive towards reduced casualties.
"There has been a reduction in the number of motorcycle casualties and as initiatives start to take more of an effect we expect the downward trend to continue. This award is a boost for the industry and for road safety, but doesn't mean we will become complacent as we still have plenty to do."
In particular, the MCI has made great steps in improving rider education, directing the distribution of free leaflets and DVDs on biker safety, while also participating heavily in teaching youngsters about the risks of dangerous riding.
Its forthcoming activities in this area will include pushing for the creation of a post-test training register, as well as for the full implementation of the government's National Motorcycle Strategy.
