Mix-up leads to retests for motorcyclists

It is emerged that thousands of motorcyclists in the UK could be illegally on the roads after a mix up by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Errors at the agency have seen the entitlement to ride a motorcycle wrongly removed from licenses, causing thousands of perfectly capable riders forced to retake their test, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The trouble came about when current licence-holders applied for photo identity licences.

Those applying for such licences are being advised by the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) to make a photocopy of the old one as without it, there may be no proof that they have actually passed a test.

In addition, immediate checks should be made as to the parameters of the new photo licence upon receipt.

Jeff Stone, press officer for the BMF, commented to the paper: "There are 1.5 million motorcycle licence-holders in the UK. We do not know the scale of the problem but we are aware that it has affected some of our members.

"The DVLA has been helpful in the cases we have brought to its attention, but, at the end of the day, if a rider cannot prove he or she has passed a test, they will have to retake it."

In addition to a full licence, bikers are reminded that it is vital to take out full UK motorbike insurance.
