Motorcycling ended 2006 on high
UK motorbike registrations for 2006 more than matched the level seen in the previous year, new statistics have revealed, after a good showing in December.
In total, more than 133,000 new motorbikes were registered last year, compared to slightly over 132,000 in 2005 - an increase made even more impressive by the fact that new car registrations fell by nearly four per cent during the same period.
The last month of the year saw registrations up by 11 per cent on the previous December, according to data from the Motor Cycle Industry (MCI), with custom, sport tourer and scooter models all doing particularly well.

MCI director of public affairs Craig Carey-Clinch commented: "Given the fall in new car registrations, the industry can take heart from the fact that motorcycling as a proportion of the new UK vehicle fleet is growing, albeit slowly.
"However, the economic climate is delicate and as people have faced rises in taxation, bills, general expenses and interest rises on mortgages, people have less disposable income to buy new."
Mr Carey-Clinch stated that the new challenge facing the motorbike sector is to branch out and win over customers from outside its usual base, by convincing a wider range of people of the benefits of motorcycling.
He claimed that two-wheeled travel is rapidly turning into the only possible option for many Brits due to rising congestion on the roads and increasingly expensive public transport.
