MAG expresses concern over DVLA blunder

Representatives from the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) have called for an immediate response to a mix-up that could result in lawful riders being unfairly victimised.

It has emerged that bikers who have applied for their licenses to be renewed could have their new documentation sent to them omitting the proof that they are entitled to ride a motorcycle, due to an error at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

The MAG is taking the issue very seriously, warning that this mishap could have wide-ranging effects on a large cross-section of riders, while also advising motorcyclists to photocopy their existing license before sending it off for renewal.

Campaigns manager David Short stated: "This is a very worrying situation.

"It will not only affect leisure riders, but may impact on professional riders such as police, paramedics and despatch riders; motorcyclists on whom the public rely for emergency services and business."

He promised that his organisation will seek answers in Parliament to its questions about the extent of the problem, as well as contacting the DVLA itself to try and come up with a solution to the entire mess.

However, the British Motorcycle Federation has claimed that, although the DVLA has been cooperative over individual cases brought before it, riders lacking proof of their eligibility to ride a motorbike have no option but to re-sit their test.
