MEP speaks on behalf of local bikers
A British member of the European Parliament (MEP) has argued against legislation that could have negative ramifications for motorcyclists in Britain.
The EU will vote this year on plans to replace the 110 different types of motorcycle license available within the bloc into one uniform permit, in a move that it is hoped will make it far more difficult for this documentation to be forged.
However, MEP for south-east England Nirj Deva criticised this move in an interview with the Wimbledon Guardian, hitting out in particular at the corollary of this proposal which will effectively raise the minimum riding age in Britain to 24.

He described the legislation as "bureaucratic and pointless" and decried the negative outcomes it would have for motorcycling enthusiasts on this side of the Channel.
Nor was Mr Deva particularly impressed with the new rider testing that is also set to be implemented, which he claimed was inconsistent because of the different bikes used in the trials.
The European Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee recently ratified this directive, which led Trevor Magner of the British Motorcycle Federation to describe the vote as "a display of ignorance about motorcycling that beggars belief".
It also earned the scorn of another British MEP, Philip Bradbourn, as well as from the Motorcycle Action Group, whose director of public affairs described the proposal as "a litany of compromises and confusion" that will do nothing to improve biker safety.
