Public not keen on bikers in bus lanes

A trial scheme permitting motorcyclists to use bus lanes has shown some positive results but there is little support for this arrangement being made permanent, a leaked report has illustrated.

This alleged Transport for London (TfL) dossier stated that there is enough capacity within the network for bikers to be accommodated in bus lanes without any impediment to the travel times or efficiency of the buses themselves.

Statistics gathered on this scheme's effects on road safety have generally proved to be contrasting, according to Motor Cycle News, but a substantial barrier to its continued implementation is a lack of wider support.

The TfL report explained: "Analysis of collision data provides generally inconclusive evidence, but do suggest that the change has had a negative effect on motorcyclist safety and a possible negative effect on the safety of other road users."

It added: "Opinion is divided but the majority do not support the use of bus lanes by [powered two-wheelers]."

TfL expressed similar reservations back in October about the possible safety ramifications of giving riders full freedom of the roads, claiming then that if anything there were fewer collisions on routes where they were not free to use bus lanes.

Such conclusions were strongly rejected by the British Motorcyclists Federation and the Motorcycle Action Group, both of which criticised the testing methods used and argued that TfL had put to negative a spin on its findings.
