FEMA seeks to reduce unnecessary rider casualties

The Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA) has announced that it will be collaborating with an EU body in order to improve roadside safety for bikers.

Last week, FEMA was granted liaison status with the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) on the issue of 'road equipment' for motorcyclists, focusing primarily on ensuring that roadside barriers protect and do not endanger bikers.

With several of its members having been injured in the past after colliding with guardrails, FEMA feels it is well suited to contribute on this issue, which corresponds strongly with its involvement in schemes to develop advanced road safety systems.

The organisation announced on its website: "FEMA will now work on convincing CEN members and the European Commission to define guardrails which will at last take motorcyclists into account, either by modifying the current EN1317 standard or by creating a brand new European standard, such as the Spanish one, for devices to be added to the existing guardrails."

FEMA has frequently campaigned in recent times for the safety of motorcyclists to be taken wholly into account in all testing of crash barriers across the continent.

Last year, one of its composite organisations succeeded in getting the installation of cable and wire roadside barriers banned in Norway for the danger that they pose to riders, mirroring legislation previously introduced in both Denmark and Holland.
